The Smithsonian Institution is now the world's largest museum complex. The National Museum of Natural History
is one of the sixteen museums and galleries of the Institution. The
NMNH manages the largest museum collection in the world - over 130
million specimens and artifacts. They were established to document the
cultural and natural diversity of the earth and to provide a foundation
for understanding the earth and its ecosystems. The museum is working
toward increasing electronic accessibility to the collections, showing
that collections and collections data can help solve current and future
problems of mankind, and bringing to decision makers' attention the
importance of collections as a global resource.

The Minnesota Historical Society's
operations include a world-class museum and library/research facility,
storage and care of 2.6 million items (including 450,000 published
materials; 800,000 sound and visual items; 87,000 cubic feet of
archives; 227,000 three-dimensional artifacts; and 950,000
archaeological specimens) in its collections, the State Archives,
conservation and processing functions, a publishing division, and a
development function, all located in the History Center. Additionally,
the Society manages a statewide network of 32 historic sites; the

is Canada's largest and most popular museum, with average attendance of
over 1,300,00 visitors annually. The CMC houses 3.75 million artifacts.

Amon Carter
Museum, located in Fort Worth, Texas, was established to house the

The Canada Science and Technology Museum collection consists of 75,000 artifacts (everything from a
600,000-pound or 272,160-kg locomotive to a thermocouple chip), 38,000
photographs, close to 21,500 technical drawings, approximately 21,500

are complemented and supported by library holdings of monographs and
serials.

is the nation's premier military museum. The collection holdings

The National Museum of
the American Indian (NMAI) is the sixteenth museum of the
Smithsonian Institution and the first national museum dedicated to the
preservation, study, and exhibition of the life, languages, literature,
history, and arts of Native Americans. Established by an act of
Congress in 1989, the museum works in collaboration with the Native
peoples of the Western Hemisphere to protect and foster their cultures
by reaffirming traditions and beliefs, encouraging contemporary
artistic expression, and empowering the Indian voice. NMAI has one of
the most extensive collections of Native American arts and artifacts in
the world—approximately 266,000 catalogue records (825,000 items)
representing over 12,000 years of history and over 1,200 indigenous
cultures throughout the Americas. In addition, NMAI holdings include
Photographic Archives (approximately 324,000 images), Media Archives
(approximately 12,000 items), and Paper Archives (approximately 1522
linear feet).

The National Museum of Health and Medicine is dedicated to preserving, collecting, and interpreting the objects, specimens, photographs and documents chronicling the history and practice of medicine. KE EMu will be used to catalogue archival materials, anatomical and pathological specimens, medical instruments and artifacts, and microscope slide-based medical research collections. The NMHM collections focus particularly on the history and practice of American medicine, military medicine, and current medical research issues.

New Jersey
State Museum collection encompasses over 2 million prehistoric and
historic specimens from nearly 100 years of excavation and over 2,000
ethnographic objects. Archeology specimens are recognized as the
definitive systematic research collection for the study of New Jersey

of northeastern North America. The state museum is multi-disciplinary,
with collections in archeology/ethnology, cultural history, fine art,
and natural history. New Jersey State Museum is the only accredited,
non-university aligned institution in New Jersey engaged in active
scientific research.

The New York Botanical Garden is one of the foremost public gardens in America and a National Historic Landmark. Yale's earliest museum collection, a miscellaneous assortment of 'natural and artificial curiosities 'from around the world, was begun in the eighteenth century and was typical of college collections of the time. There are more than eleven million specimens and objects held by the Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale University curatorial divisions, less than one percent of which can be displayed to the public at any given time. The collections include tens of thousands of types (the original specimens used when a new species of plant or animal was first described to science).

Since
its inception in 1933, the RCMP Historical Collections Unit (formerly the RCMP
Centennial Museum) has been the caretaker of nearly 40,000 objects,
documents, uniforms and firearms relating to the history of the Royal
Canadian Mounted Police. This collection covers the history of the
force from its creation in 1873 until the present time and tells the
story of the lives and careers of Mounties stationed across Canada.
The Unit occupies space leased from the RCMP Heritage Centre in
Regina, Saskatchewan.

KE EMu will be installed at 20 museums around the USA, from undersea museums to historical centres. The museums range in size from very large to some medium and a few small ones. Over 1,000,000 records will be catalogued using a standardized KE EMu catalogue and management modules.

The
United States
Polar Rock
Repository (USPRR) is a national facility at the Byrd Polar
Research Center, Ohio State University. It is supported by the National
Science Foundation Office of Polar Programs. The repository houses rock
collections from polar regions for use by researchers and educators
around the world. The repository also contains associated materials such
as field notes, annotated photos and maps, raw analytic data,
paleomagnetic cores, ground rock and mineral residues, thin sections,
microfossil mounts, microslides and residues.

Determined to share with the public his vast collection of Americana, Henry
Francis du Pont founded Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library in 1951. But du Pont did more than establish a great museum and naturalistic garden. In a single lifetime he created an extraordinary American country estate on par with English examples that had evolved over centuries. In its heyday Winterthur had few counterparts; today it is the greatest surviving example of its kind in the nation.
